Las Vegas Self Storage: Long Term Storage Solutions
What Is the Difference Between Self Storage Units and Storage Units?
First thing first, let’s talk about the difference between self storage units and storage units. These days, people often use these terms interchangeably, but for some, there is a distinct difference between the two.
Self storage most often refers to storage facilities that allow clients to drive up to their storage units that are usually climate controlled. The biggest draw of self-storage facilities is that clients are responsible for moving and handling their belongings. Additionally, self storage units allow users to access their units when needed.
Clients have less control over their storage unit and property when discussing storage units (often called full-service storage facilities). When signing up for a full-service storage unit, you allow the storage company to manage and store your property, giving them the right to access and handle it as they see fit. Relinquishing control of your property opens your items up to damage. Another significant difference in a full-service storage unit is that clients must seek permission to enter the grounds and access their personal property in their storage unit. However, clients can drive up and access their storage right away when renting self storage units.
Long Term Storage VS Short Term Storage
In addition to different storage units, there are different types of storage packages – for example, long term storage vs short term storage.
The difference between the two types of storage may seem obvious, but let’s take a look anyway.
Long term storage is a storage option for clients who wish to store their property for long periods. At Ace Self Storage, we generally consider a client to have long term storage needs if they need storage for over three months.
Clients most often select long term storage if they are going to be away for extended periods – for example, military deployment, or if they need more storage space than they have at home.
Short term storage is a storage option for clients needing to store their property for shorter periods. Again, at Ace Self Storage, we consider clients to be short term clients if they need storage for less than three months.
Clients often select short term storage if they only need somewhere to store their property in the immediate future, for example, if they need a few weeks to store items between moves or somewhere to store a large item before it sells.
Is Long Term Storage Right for You?
Not everyone needs to use long term storage, but at Ace Self Storage, most of our clients are long term. Here in Las Vegas, it isn’t uncommon to have long term storage needs because we have so many performers with closets and closets full of costumes that simply won’t fit in the closet at home!
If you are unsure whether long term storage is the right choice for you, we encourage you to step back and think about your needs realistically. For example, if you are moving house in two weeks and need somewhere to store boxes, you may think that short term storage is the right option for your needs. However, if you also know that you procrastinate and likely won’t get to unpack all those boxes within three months, consider investing in long term storage instead.
How Long is Long Term for Long Term Storage?
As mentioned above, Ace Self Storage considers “long term” to be anything over three months. Most storage unit companies abide by this guideline, too. Before signing any contracts, it is best to talk to a storage company about their definition of long vs. short term rentals so you know what you are signing up for!
Do I Pay More for Long Term Self Storage?
Technically yes. You pay more for long-term self-storage simply because you will store your items longer than in a short term storage unit. For example, you may pay for two months of storage with a short term storage unit, but you may pay for six months with a long term storage unit. Obviously, six months is longer than three, and you will pay more.
As for the cost of a rental unit, the answer to this question depends on a range of factors including:
- The size of the storage unit you need
- The company you are storing with
- The location of the storage unit company
- The time of year that you need storage
- Whether the storage company has any current specials or discounts available
- Whether you are a member of certain groups, like veterans
Many storage unit companies, Ace Self Storage included, offer discounts for members of different groups. For example, we offer a 10% fee discount for veterans, seniors, and the military.
